PMP® certification in Malaysia — what it requires, what it costs, and how to choose a provider
A neutral guide. We do not sell PMP certification, which is why we can tell you plainly what it involves.

PMP® — Project Management Professional — is a certification awarded by the Project Management Institute. It is the most widely recognised project management credential in Malaysia, and it appears often enough in job advertisements and tender documents that people go looking for it specifically.
The information around it in Malaysia is almost entirely published by providers selling courses, which makes it hard to get a straight answer about requirements and cost. This guide is not that: we do not sell PMP certification and have no commercial relationship with anyone who does. The requirements below come from PMI, and where we cannot verify something we say so rather than filling the gap.
What PMI actually requires
There are two components: documented project management experience, and 35 hours of project management education. The experience requirement varies by your level of formal education; the 35 hours does not vary at all.
Note the pathway most people miss — an associate’s degree or vocational trade school diploma sits between the secondary and bachelor’s routes at 48 months. Malaysian candidates with a diploma frequently assume they fall under the 60-month rule and delay applying for two years longer than they need to.

Why every genuine course is five days
35 contact hours is five training days. This is why every provider running real PMP preparation in Malaysia runs a five-day course, and it is the fastest way to sanity-check a quote.
A two or three day "PMP course" cannot deliver 35 hours. It may be a good practical project management course — we run those ourselves — but it will not satisfy PMI’s education requirement, and a provider who is vague about contact hours is a provider to ask directly.
What it costs in Malaysia
Malaysian providers advertise roughly RM5,700 to RM7,600 per person for a five-day PMP preparation course, read from the live Malaysian search results in September 2026. That figure excludes PMI’s own exam fee and any membership, which are paid separately to PMI.
Foreign online providers advertise considerably less — in some cases under RM1,500 for the same nominal 35 hours. That gap is real and worth understanding rather than dismissing: online delivery has no venue or trainer travel cost, and the buyer is usually an employer spending a levy balance rather than an individual price-shopping. Whether a large online cohort suits a particular candidate is a separate question from whether it is cheaper.
Both routes are normally HRD Corp claimable where the provider and course are registered with HRD Corp.
How to check a provider properly
Check PMI’s Authorized Training Partner directory for current status, rather than trusting a badge on a website. This is the only check that matters and it takes a minute.
Confirm the course is five days and that the provider states its contact hours in writing, because that is what you will need if PMI audits the application.
Ask who is actually teaching. In a small market the same freelance trainers deliver for several providers, and the trainer matters more to the experience than the brand on the invoice.
Treat quoted pass rates with scepticism. They are not independently verified anywhere, they are trivially selective about which cohorts get counted, and no provider publishes the denominator.
And the question most people should ask first
Before booking anything, it is worth being honest about who has the problem. PMP certifies one person. If what your organisation actually needs is for a whole team to run projects the same way, certification is an expensive and slow route to that, and it certifies the wrong number of people.
That is not a reason to avoid certification — if someone needs the credential, they need it. It is a reason to ask the question explicitly rather than defaulting to the term you had heard of.

›Is PMP certification worth it in Malaysia?
For an individual whose next role or client contract asks for it, generally yes — it is the credential Malaysian employers and tender documents name most often.
For a company trying to improve how its projects run, it is an indirect route: it certifies one person rather than changing how a team works. Both can be true at once, which is why the sequenced answer — certify the one who needs it, train the team who need to work together — is often the right one.
›Can I do the 35 hours online?
PMI accepts qualifying project management education from a range of sources, and online delivery is common. What matters is that the education is qualifying and that you can evidence the hours if audited.
Confirm acceptance with PMI before paying. We are not in a position to tell you what PMI will accept and would not guess at it.
›Is PMP certification HRD Corp claimable?
Where the training provider and the specific course are registered with HRD Corp and the employer applies for the grant before the training takes place, in-house and public training are both normally claimable under the HRD Corp Claimable Courses (SBL-KHAS) scheme.
PMI’s own exam and membership fees are paid to PMI and are a separate question from the course fee. Confirm what is covered with HRD Corp and the provider before assuming.
